Education Hour Speaker for January Meeting

TOPIC: Bioflavonoids: Benefits for Skin and Formulating “Green”

ABSTRACT:
Nature’s solutions have been used to combat health problems since ancient times. Over 3,000 years ago the use of medicinal plants to treat skin diseases was documented in the papyrus Ebers (1). The traditional description for use of medicinal plants is generally not linked to topical application. The interrelationship of seemingly different health problems is not always obvious. For example a plant used to treat diabetes may be useful to help prevent wrinkles or perhaps to reduce inflammation, acne and itching. The ability to identify new cosmetic uses for botanicals is enhanced when science is able to advance beyond anecdotal information to elucidation of the mechanism of activity. Once the mechanism of activity is elucidated there is an opportunity to decide the most appropriate form for delivery of the plant’s “active(s).” Is a standardized or enriched extract, a purified compound directly isolated from plants, a modified isolated natural compound more desirable? In the example presented, the bioflavonoid Tiliroside found in a variety of medicinal plants including tilia, malva appears to have the reported activity described below as a single compound. Tiliroside is found in the hairy protrusions and young leaves of plants growing in tropical regions of the world. Tiliroside protects plants from ultraviolet-induced and environmental stress.

This presentation will highlight the study that was conducted to demonstrate that the bioflavonoid responsible for protecting the plant from environmental stress can also provide benefits for people. In vitro and in vivo methods were used to generate the data. Two bioflavonoids were evaluated , Tiliroside and isoquercetin which was evaluated for antoxidant activity using a variety of methods.

TOPIC: Making Sense of Natural Standards and Green Ingredients and How You Can Make A Difference With More Sustainable Results

ABSTRACT:

In order to effect change, one does this through knowledge versus fear as with so much we see today. Become a stakeholder and take part in creating a community for formulators, suppliers and marketers alike that gives a voice to the formulator based on Global demand for Green Ingredients.

Just like other fields, Chemistry is one that has gone Green. This process involves considering not only the biodegradability and toxicity of a chemical product, but the entire life span of the product when using it in practice and its environmental footprint to produce. Green chemistry continues to grow in tandem with the green movement. Companies that recognize the importance of this emphasis on sustainability are emerging at the forefront of their respective fields.

The aim of GreenGredients.com is to provide a one stop resource to chemists, product developers, marketers and management to explore the variety of standards that have been put forth by both domestic and global organizations all in the attempt to create guidelines for more environmentally friendly Natural and Green Chemistry ingredients and to provide a guide for the selection criteria for green ingredients that conform to greener standards of 100% pant based feed stocks that are sustainable and renewable.

GreenGredients was founded in 2009 to accelerate technical and sales information exchange for Green Ingredients between raw material suppliers and formulators in the cosmetic industry.

During the development phase of a new product or simply the reformulating process, locating raw materials and technical product information that addresses the conflicting standards presented both domestically and globally, it occurred to Sharon Christie that there is a need for a resource that can interpret the standards across the landscape and provide a resource that not only summarizes the standards but links you to the given site as well as listing the ingredients that meet the Principles of “Green Chemistry”. Sharon Christie developed the GreenGredients.com website to solve this information exchange issue. GreenGredients.com is the first knowledge based website to look at the issues from a product development perspective and applications side to provide practical logical guidelines that all can follow to start a continuing process for the selection of healthier eco- friendly ingredients. By offering this platform FREE to Vendors and the resource information FREE to formulators and marketers in one resource, they will be more informed from a global view and see that the hierarchy that GreenGredients philosophy suggests is one that down the road will save them from costly market barriers when ready to market into multiple distribution channels or Internationally. Ingredient reform will take place globally and now is the time for a call to action to change any ingredients that can go from Good to Better to Best in meeting these standards.

GreenGredients offers specialized information exchange services that connect technical experts at formulated-product manufacturers with technical documents, sales and support personnel at raw material suppliers – at exactly the right moment to save time and money for both parties. Use of the GreenGredients.com dramatically reduces a formulator’s time to locate ingredients and simultaneously improves the speed and quality of a supplier’s response to that customer’s requests for information. GreenGredients.com also provides participating suppliers with timely insights into their prospects’ product development processes, facilitating and potentially shortening the sales process.

Formulator membership in the GreenGredients.com is FREE to formulators with company validation and registration. Supplier membership requires NO FEE subscription for a suite of services including product documentation listings, specialized document search and retrieval capabilities for prospects and customers, sample request processing and utilization of other direct communication services that connect them with potential buyers.
