Education Hour Speaker for September Meeting

TOPIC: Amphiphilic Silicone Compounds

ABSTRACT:
Amphiphilic silicone compounds are becoming more and more important in the formulation of personal care products. Amphiphilic silicone polymers orient themselves at interfaces and are surface active. Amphiphilic silicone compounds offer advantages over amphiphilic materials based upon only oil and water soluble groups. The altered properties include:
  • Improved surface tension reduction
  • Wetting in water, and oil based systems
  • Emulsification properties
  • Film forming properties
  • Irritation mitigation
  • Jellification of oils
  • Alteration of playtime and cushion
The ability to properly choose a silicone surfactant can result in formulations with improved functionality. The presentation will address the structure / function properties of this class of compounds in personal care applications.

BIO:

Tony O’Lenick is President of Siltech LLC. A company he founded in 1989. Siltech is a silicone and surfactant specialty company.

TOPIC: From molecular unit to functional tissue: how to repair damaged skin

ABSTRACT:

In today’s market, the word repair represents a key concept in skin care, sun care and hair care, regardless of which country you are in. Launches claiming a repairing efficacy are very popular in Europe and are growing in the USA. But what led to that repair concept in cosmetics? Natural and biological daily factors are responsible for micro-lesions into the skin. Without repairing itself, the skin has to face visible imperfections and damages and requires specific care. In recent years, the focus has been on surgery-like and doctor brand creams insisting on high-level technologies and efficacy. That dynamic trend is the starting point of the multi-target and transversal repair concept. Cosmetic brands require thus efficient actives to support that concept and aim to rely on several levels of mechanisms.

Inside cutaneous cells, certain molecules (DNA, proteins) are aggressed by endogenous and exogenous stresses. Repairing those damages is necessary. Similarly, but on a higher level, tissue functionalities are affected. To maintain the dermal-epidermal junction folding, to ensure the barrier function homeostasis, and to recover the extra-cellular matrix composition and organization are crucial.

Having researched the field of actives for 25 years, SILAB proposes innovative solutions based on efficacy and safety to conscientiously fulfil current trends in cosmetic commitments.
